Moving a Peloton Bike (Avoid Doing THIS!)
Peloton has been around for nearly a decade now and the used
bike market is really starting to heat up. And rightfully so, since you can
save a ton of money buying a second-hand Peloton.

If you just bought a Peloton, congrats! Now you’re probably
wondering how to move it home.
Before moving a Peloton, remove the touchscreen, pedals,
water bottle holder, and weight holders. Lower the handlebar and
seat to their lowest possible settings and tighten the adjustment levers.
Pelotons weigh 140 pounds and are 4ft x 2ft, so make sure you have someone with
you to help move it!
It is important to note that Pelotons are made with some
fragile and expensive parts, such as the touchscreen, which you must consider
while preparing for your move. Any damage to these parts can be costly.
How much does a peloton weigh?
Pelotons are fairly heavy exercise bikes. They can weigh
anywhere from 135 to 140 pounds, depending on the model. The flywheel alone
can weigh up to 40 pounds.
Pelotons have a footprint of 4 feet by 2 feet.
That’s a decent amount of weight per foot.
The weight and size of the bike provide much-needed
stability during demanding rides. So when you decide to push yourself to the
limit during your workout, your bike won’t move out of position on you.
However, the weight of these bikes can become an issue
when you want to move them to a different location. Since they are
relatively bulky, you will likely not be able to carry or lift your Peloton
alone.
If you’re just relocating it to another room, that’s another
story. These bikes come equipped with wheels for easy transportation.
Is a peloton easy to transport?
Transporting a peloton is not terribly difficult, but you
will want at least one other person to help. The most challenging parts involve
disassembling it and then carrying it and loading it into your car.
Before you move your bike, I recommend lowering the
handlebar and seat to the lowest possible setting and making sure
all the adjustment levers are as tight as they can be.
I also recommend you remove all the bike’s delicate
accessories. These include:
- touchscreen
- pedals
- water
bottle holder
- weight
holders
When these pieces are removed (details on how to remove them
below) and the bike handlebar and seat have been lowered and secured, you can
start to move your bike!
If you’re moving your Peloton bike to a completely new
destination, I highly suggest you tie the bike down using ratchet
straps to stabilize it. The straps will prevent it from moving around
loosely while in transit.
Alternatively, you can hire professional movers to help
transport your peloton to its new location. Most moving companies have
liability insurance that can help protect your investment in case of any damage
during the move.
Taking apart your Peloton for easier transportation
You should disassemble your Peloton for easier, safer
transportation and then simply reassemble it once you reach your destination.
The process can be a bit overwhelming if you don’t know what
to do but I promise it’s easy.
How to remove the Peloton screen:
- Disconnect
the two connectors (3.5mm data cable and power cable) from the touchscreen
of the bike
- Disconnect
the power cable from the rear stabilizer/stand
Bike:
- Remove
the plastic mount cover from the back of the touchscreen
- Using
a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the four mounting screws to remove the
screen from the mount
Bike+:
- Make
sure the touch screen is vertical and rotated 180 degrees (facing away
from the bike). Then tilt the screen all the way up, facing the ceiling.
- Using
a 4mm Allen wrench, remove the two bolts securing the screen in place
How to remove the pedals:
- Next,
you’ll remove the pedals with a 15mm wrench
- For
the right pedal, turn the wrench counterclockwise
- For
the left pedal, turn it clockwise
How to remove the water bottle holder:
- First,
turn the resistance knob all the way to the right to lower the magnetic
brake
- Then,
using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the water
bottle holder
- Using
both hands, pull the water bottle holder down and out
How to remove the weight holder:
- Using
a 4mm Allen wrench, remove the two bolts on the right side of the weight
holder
- Then
remove the two bolts on the left side of the weight holder
- Two
separate parts will come off the bike
Can a peloton be put on its side?
Yes, you can put a Peloton on its side, but only
after disassembling the delicate parts from the bike (again, delicate
parts include the touchscreen, pedals, water bottle holder, and weight
holders).
If you try putting your Bike on its side without removing
these parts, you will most likely break them.
For example, the touch screen is highly fragile and
susceptible to damage. If you try putting your Peloton on its side with
this screen still attached, all the weight of the bike is going to rest on it
and likely crack it.
The same holds true for the water bottle holder, weight
holders, etc. These parts are far more fragile than the solid metal frame of
the bike.
Can a Peloton fit in an SUV?
Yes, a Peloton can easily fit into an SUV. Pelotons
have a 4-foot by 2-foot footprint, while SUVs have a maximum cargo space of up
to 144 cubic feet. With such a large luggage area, your Peloton bike can
undoubtedly fit in your SUV without any issues.
Ultimately, though, whether or not the bike fits in your
vehicle really depends on the cargo space of your car.
But if it gives you any reassurance, here is my brother
and his wife comfortably moving their Peloton Bike in their 2018 Subaru
Forester.
The Forester has 74.7 cubic feet of trunk space. While that
amount of space is amazing for a compact SUV, it’s about half the maximum space
of a regular-size SUV. The point is, your Peloton will fit!
Transporting your Peloton with a truck
If you have a truck or some other vehicle with a
flatbed, you might be able to transport your Peloton fully upright
without needing to disassemble it.
After all, taking your bike apart into pieces and then
assembling it later can be a bit time-consuming.
Here are the steps you should take to prepare to move
your Peloton:
- Disconnect
the two connectors (3.5mm data cable and power cable) from the screen of
the bike
- Disconnect
the power cable from the rear stabilizer/stand
- Lower
the handlebars to the lowest position using the adjustable rod
- Lower
the seat to its lowest position using the adjustable rod underneath
- Remove
any weights stored at the back of the peloton
- Wrap
the display screen with a heavy towel or bubble wrap
- Wrap
the pedals, seat, and flywheel with a moving blanket
- Your
peloton is now ready and secure for moving
Now that your Peloton is ready to be moved, simply lift it
with a friend and load it upright into the bed of your vehicle.
Be sure to use ratchet straps to tie the bike down into
place. The bike should not be able to move at all.
